Plan Ahead for Federal Bank Holidays

Federal bank holidays affect the processing of direct deposit payrolls. Because banks and the ACH network are closed on these holidays, direct deposits cannot settle on a federal bank holiday.

If your employees are scheduled to be paid on a federal bank holiday, you'll need to plan ahead to avoid delays.

Important: When banks close for a federal holiday, view your payroll options below.

What Happens If My Pay Date Falls on a Holiday?

If your scheduled pay date falls on a federal bank holiday:

  • Direct deposits will not be paid on the holiday.
  • Employees will receive payment on the next available banking day unless you adjust your payroll schedule.
  • The "Submit By Date" displayed on your payroll run will automatically update to reflect the earlier submission deadline for eligible direct deposit payrolls.

Your Payroll Options

Depending on your agency's needs, you have several options when a pay date falls on a federal bank holiday.

Goal

Recommended Option

Keep the same pay date and pay period

Submit payroll by the earlier Submit By Date shown in Aaniie Payroll.

Keep the same pay date if you miss the direct deposit deadline

Change the payment method to Paper Check.

Keep direct deposit and the same pay period

Submit payroll one business day earlier so funds can settle before the holiday.

Keep direct deposit but cannot submit earlier

Move the pay date to the next available banking day.

4-Day vs. 2-Day Payroll Processing

If your agency is currently approved for 4-Day Processing, you may want to consider applying for 2-Day Processing, especially around federal holidays.

To request an upgrade to 2-Day Processing:

  1. Email support@aaniie.com.
  2. Include your most recent 90 days of business bank statements.
  3. Our Payroll Risk Team will review your account.
  4. If approved, your processing timeframe will be updated to 2-Day Processing.

Please Note: Approval is based on a review by our Payroll Risk Team and is not guaranteed.

Best Practices

☐ Review the federal holiday calendar at the beginning of each year.

☐ Watch for holidays that fall on your scheduled pay dates.

☐ Review the Submit By Date shown on each payroll before processing.

☐ Submit payroll early whenever a holiday affects your processing schedule.

☐ If you cannot meet the earlier submission deadline, consider adjusting your pay date or using paper checks.

Important Reminder

Federal bank holidays are determined by the banking system and cannot be overridden by Aaniie Payroll.

Planning ahead helps ensure your employees receive their pay on time.
